When it met in special session April 19, the Watonga School Board had a single item on the agenda, a new hire.

That new hire was Bowan Nyberg, who will serve as the Lady Eagle assistant softball coach and head basketball coach. A 2016 graduate of Seiling High School, Nyberg played college basketball at Panhandle State University in Goodwell.

More recently, he served as the assistant coach at Lomega High School, where the girls basketball team was named as the 2024 state champions.

“We are pretty excited,” said Superintendent Kyle Hilterbran. “We are looking forward to great things.”

Nyberg is something of a legacy as his parents both coached at Watonga in the early 2000s. He took to social media to express his pleasure in coming to Watonga.

“I am excited to announce that I have accepted the head girls basketball position,” he wrote. “I would like to thank the ..administration for giving me this great opportunity to lead the girls basketball program. Now it is time for the work to begin. Go Eagles!” he concluded.

As soon as the hire was official, Nyberg met with the Lady Eagles to begin building that relationship. He is taking over for coaches Lauren Campo and Alyssa Fuxa.

Nyberg will also teach PE.
