Get ready to laugh and have fun with Watonga Community Theatre in its upcoming show Rex’s Exes.
Under the direction of Patt Ward Curtin, this deliriously funny Southern- fried farce finds the Verdeen cousins Gaynelle, Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette, played by Amy Adams, Kim Coney and Arianna Parkinson, teetering on the brink of disaster again.
Adams’ character, Gaynelle, frazzled from working too many jobs, refuses to face the fact she’s turning 50. In a misguided effort to lift her cousin’s spirits, Coney’s character, Peaches, a cosmetologist for the local mortuary, is determined to throw Gaynelle a surprise birthday party.
Jimmie Wy, played by Arianna Parkinson, has opened her new business, Wide Bride, a wedding gown boutique for big gals. She reluctantly agrees to help Peaches surprise Gaynelle.
It turns out the surprise is on them when the party plans shift to a hastily thrown-together family funeral instead. The hilarity escalates when Peaches’ recently declared dead husband unexpectedly returns and his romantic links to each of the cousins is revealed.
The hits just keep on coming as a bounty hunter, played by Quinton Wray, crashes the funeral. “This play will keep you laughing from beginning to end,” Curtin said. “I just love the comedy from these playwrights.”
WCT has performed several plays by Jones-Hope-Wooten, including Double Wide, Texas, Christmas Belles, Hallelujah Girls and Dixie Swim Club.
“I’m very happy with this cast,” Curtin explained. “We have two newcomers, Jeremiah Rogers and Alexa Roane, and they are wonderful!”
